You can’t put all the wine bottles you want to keep chilled in your refrigerator. Not only does it not look cool to remove a bottle from your fridge, a regular fridge doesn’t keep your wine at the right temperature. Instead, you need a wine fridge to keep those bottles chilled to just the right temperature. And, oh yeah, it should look cool, too!
If you’re going to buy one of the available wine fridges there are a few helpful things you should before you buy. Not every beverage cooler is a wine cooler. Beverage coolers are made for soda and beer and so their low temperatures are too low for wine. Likewise, small refrigerators aren’t good as wine coolers.
Wine coolers are designed to hold wine bottles. They have very specific holders built-in to the cooler that are made for the size of a wine bottle. If you buy an 18-bottle wine cooler, you shouldn’t expect that you’re going to be able to cram 4 or 5 more in there. While it’s okay to cram beer and soda together, wine bottles maintain a more even temperature when they have room around them for cool air circulation.
If you have vintage bottles of wine that you aren’t planning to drink for several years, a wine cooler is not a good choice. Wine coolers are for those vintages you’re planning to drink within a year or two. More sophisticated models exist at greater cost to handle long-term aging.
Your wine won’t rest if it’s being vibrated and shaken its entire life. Thermoelectric cooling is designed to be effective while also being vibration-free. One caution; thermoelectric cooling is only capable of cooling to about 30 degrees below ambient air temperature. This means that once the temperature gets above 85 degrees, the wine fridge temperature inside cooler will rise above the recommended 55 degrees for optimum wine storage.
More expensive models with compressors vibrate so make sure that some isolation is provided like rubber mounting for the compressor and vibration dampening racks to hold the wine.
If you like the look of a glass front door to show off your collection, make sure the glass has UV protection as the sun’s UV rays can damage your wine.
Another thing to look for is value. You can spend a lot of money on a wine cooler fridge. Let me say it again. You can spend a lot of money on a wine refrigerator. If you’re not storing a vintage collection for the long term, you can save money by going with a name brand thermoelectric model that stores the number of bottles you want to store.
