12V Refrigerator: Top 5 Best Vehicle Coolers and Refrigerators 2017

A 12V refrigerator is a very handy thing to have whether you’re taking the boat out for the day, cruising to that picnic in the park, 4-wheelin’ it in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, or any of a 100 other activities where it would be great to have cold drinks available.

Which 12V refrigerator should you buy?  The first thing you need to ask yourself is if you need a cooler or an actual compressor-based 12V refrigerator.  What’s the difference?  There is a really big difference!  Coolers are great during the cooler days of Spring and Fall, but when it comes to cooling in the heat of summer you may have a problem.

Typical coolers only reduce the temperature inside to about 40
degrees below the ambient (nearby) temperature.  That means if the temperature reaches the 90’s F, you will be lucky to get the temperature in the cooler to lower than 50 degrees F.  Cool, but not nearly cold enough for most food and drinks.  Many cooler manufacturers recommend you to pre-chill food, beverages, and even the cooler itself prior to using it.

A 12V refrigerator, on the other hand, can keep your food and drinks chilled to temperatures at or below that of your home refrigerator whenever you need it and that is probably more of what you would expect from a 12V refrigerator.

That being said, there is another big difference between coolers and refrigerators; the price!  A typical high-quality cooler will probably cost you around $100 – $300.  A good compressor-based 12V refrigerator will run into the hundreds or even more than a thousand dollars.  If you really need a 12V refrigerator and not the cooler, the fridge will be worth the price to you.  If you are only looking to keep drinks cool in your air conditioned car or truck while traveling, then the price of a cooler makes more sense.

    Hi Mark,
My niece does not have insurance and has savvier lower back pain needing constant ice packs especially when traveling. Do you know of any cheap / reasonably priced car refrigerator – freezers that will cool below 32 degrees?
    Thankx
    Robert

    • Mark Ridgeway

Hi, sorry to hear about your niece’s lower back problems. I’ve been there, but not as serious as her. I hope she finds relief soon. A chiropractor really helped me, but I had insurance. Unfortunately, the portable true-compressor fridge/freezers are not cheap. The lowest-price one I can find is the Dometic CDF-11 and it’s around $325 on Amazon. It’s also one of the smallest which would probably make it nice for her car. Best of luck to her in finding relief! I wish I could be more help! -Mark

Thank you for the research on refrigerators. Looking for a small 12v Ref. to place on my camper tongue. Towing with my Gold Wing trike. Size / weight is critical 15/20 qt !!

    Any suggestions?

  3. Katherine Wright

Hi, Mark. Thanks for your post about car refrigerators/coolers. I just bought a new Yukon and would ideally like to have a fridge or cooler permanently installed in the car between the middle row of seats. Do you have any idea if this is possible and what would be best? I live in Austin, sell real estate (nice to have cold beverages for clients), and do a long road trip in the summer with my family.

    Thank you for your guidance,

    Katherine

    • Mark Ridgeway

Hi Katherine, I don’t have any measurements on the Yukon between the seats and as for permanent mounting, you would need to talk to someone who installs automotive equipment to know if it’s possible. As for the cooler/fridge, the question is do you want thermoelectric, compressor-based, or just a cooler to put ice in? The cooler to put ice in gives you the most options in size and colors but I don’t know how you would permanently mount it. Thermoelectric is the least expensive refrigeration type, but there are fewer choices of size and color than coolers and they would probably be more difficult to mount. For refrigeration though, you’re more likely to find a thermoelectric model that will fit, becauses there are a number of portable models available. I know of only one compressor-based model that might fit, but again, not sure about mounting it. The compressor-based true refrigerator is made by Dometic. It’s nice looking and here’s a link to look at it. http://amzn.to/28ISu6X It’s 19 Length x 15 width x 13 high inches. We also took a look at it in this article http://www.bestrefrigeratorcentral.com/portable-refrigerator-top-8-portable-real-fridges/ Hope this helps! -Mark

  4. Rick

Thanks for your post Mark. If I want to run a fridge and make a smoothie with Magic Bullet which needs 120 for 20 or 30 seconds is there some sort of inverter type gadget that I can use in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo?
    Q #2
Is there any unit that would be superior to the ARB if you did the comparison today?
    Thank you
    Rick

    • Mark Ridgeway Mark Ridgeway

Hi Rick, there are lots of inverters available and they’re even building them into some vehicles like my Jeep. You can look on Amazon here – http://amzn.to/2aOx2k1 Just make sure you match the amp/watt requirements with the device you’re running. As for what is the best portable refrigerator, I like Whynter, ARB, and Dometic. Dometic is probably the most durable, but they are all great refrigerators. Also, take a look because some of the refrigerators come with built-in outlets that provide inverted power. -Mark
